Appealing your Leaving Certificate results

Can I appeal my Leaving Certificate results?

Yes, you could appeal your Leaving Certificate results in 2025.

If you were not satisfied with the marks you got in one or more subjects of the Leaving Certificate examination, you could appeal those results to the State Examinations Commission (SEC).

If you appealed your mark in a written exam, your script was sent to an appeal examiner for re-marking.

The Leaving Certificate 2025 exam results were released at 10am on Friday, 22 August 2025.

How to apply to appeal your Leaving Certificate results in 2025

The timeframe for the issuing of Leaving Certificate results and appealing your results is very narrow.

It was important to be aware of these dates and times if you thought you might want to appeal one or some of your results. Late applications for viewing scripts or appeals were not accepted.

You could appeal your Leaving Certificate results online on the Candidate Self Service Portal from Sunday, 31 August 2025 at 10am. Applications to appeal online closed on Monday, 1 September 2025 at 5pm.

It was advisable to view your exam script before you appealed your results.

The SEC Candidate helpline is available on 1800 111 135 or 1800 111 136 from Friday, 22 August 2025 from 9am to 5pm.

You can also email candidateportal@examinations.ie outside of these hours. You must include your exam number in your email.

Applying to see your exam script

After you got your exam results, you could apply to view your examination script. This allowed you to see how your work was marked so you could make an appeal if you thought there was a mistake. There was no fee to view your exam scripts.

You had to apply to view your Leaving Certificate 2025 exam scripts. Applications opened on Tuesday, 26 August 2025 and closed on Wednesday, 27 August 2025.

You could apply to see your Leaving Certificate 2025 exam scripts on the Candidate Self-Service Portal. Leaving Certificate Applied candidates had to apply by email to viewlcascript@examinations.ie.

When can I view my exam script?

If you applied to view your script and it was marked manually, you were invited to a 3-hour viewing session in your school on Saturday, 30 August 2025.

If your script was marked online, you got access to view your script online for 24 hours between 9am on Saturday, 30 August 2025 and 9am on Sunday, 31 August 2025.

Rectification outside of the appeal process

If you viewed your script and believed there was a clear discrepancy between the mark awarded and the subsequent grade awarded, you also had means of redress. You could ask the Organising Superintendent at the viewing session for a Rectification Outside of the Appeal Process Form.

This rectification service applied only where it was clear that the total mark was inconsistent with the grade awarded and where this matter could be resolved administratively.

When will I know the outcome if I appeal?

It is expected that appeal results will be available on the Candidate Self Service Portal (CSSP) on Friday, 26 September 2025.

Changes to exam results from the appeals process are automatically sent to the Central Applications Office. Final CAO offers will be made on 30 September 2025.

How the Leaving Certificate appeal process works

Your script will be sent to an appeal examiner for re-marking. This will not be the same person who originally marked your work. The same marking scheme is used for re-marking. This means that appeal examiners apply the same standards in re-marking as were applied to all candidates in the original examination.

For Leaving Certificate 2025, a post-marking adjustment was made to all results. These are additional marks awarded to a candidate's component results. Post-marking adjustments cannot be appealed. However, the post-adjustment changes if your overall mark changes following the appeal.

Independent Appeal Scrutineers

If you are unhappy with the outcome of your appeal, you can refer your examination appeal to the Independent Appeal Scrutineers to check that the appeal processes were carried out properly. The Scrutineers cannot re-mark scripts or comment on how marks were allocated.

To apply, you must complete the Independent Appeal Scrutineers form. You can download it from the Candidate Self Service Portal. You must email the form to entries@examinations.ie by Friday, 10 October 2025.

You do not need to have viewed your remarked appeals script to apply to the Independent Appeal Scrutineers. Late applications will not be accepted.

You can find out more in the guide to your appeal results and post appeal process (pdf).

Exam appeal fees

In 2025, the fees to appeal each subject were:

  • Leaving Certificate, €40 per subject
  • Leaving Certificate Applied, €15.50 per subject

If your appeal is successful and your subject result is upgraded, you will get a refund of the appeal fee for that subject.
