As a driver, you should know that Gardaí can use a breathalyser to test you for alcohol levels and test your saliva for drugs.

It is an offence if you refuse to be tested for drink and drugs if the Gardaí stop your car.

When can I be tested for drink or drug driving?

Gardaí can set up a roadblock to conduct random alcohol and drug testing of drivers.

Drug testing after a car crash

If you are the driver in a serious car collision, the Gardaí must test you for drugs in your system at the roadside.

You must stay at the roadside until the test shows either a presence or absence of drugs in your system. This can take up to 30 minutes.
