Taking parent’s leave this summer?
7 August 2025
Did you know?
Wondering if you can take leave from work this summer to spend time with your young child?
Parent’s leave lets each parent take 9 weeks leave from work during:
- The first 2 years of their child’s life
- The first 2 years of an adopted child’s placement with your family
Your employer doesn’t have to pay you during this leave (though some may).
If you have enough PRSI contributions, you can also claim Parent’s Benefit while you are on parent’s leave from work. Read more about how much you can claim if you are eligible for Parents Benefit.
You must give your employer at least 6 weeks’ notice before the leave starts.
Your employer may postpone the leave. They can only refuse it, if you aren’t entitled to it.
